December 1, 2009 – Coalition for Healthcare Worker and Patient Safety (CHAPS) Supports HR 2381 -- The Nurse and HealthCare Worker Protection Act of 2009. Please read the press release for mre details but "The Bottom Line" is; Health care worker exposure to occupational injury is simply not an acceptable risk associated with patient care. Patient safety cannot be adequately addressed if employee safety is not being adequately addressed. Federal Legislation, and Grant money to assist health care facilities demonstrating financial need to purchase safe patient handling equipment, will enable the U.S. healthcare industry to improve worker and patient safety,

August 21, 2009 – Medcare Products, Inc. donates ceiling lift to disabled student at Southwest State University to pursue higher education.Medcare was recently notified through the Out of Ashes organization in Port Orchard, Washington that a local MN student was in need of a ceiling lift in his dorm room. The student is an adult that is confined to a wheelchair and only has limited use of his right arm. Southwest State University has guaranteed the student the same dorm room for all four years because Medcare has donated a ceiling lift. The Medcare ceiling lift will give the student greater ease of mobility and allow him increased independence. The Medcare ceiling lift is being installed by the university and will be ready for use at the start of the school year. Brooks Smith, President of Medcare Products states, “When we were contacted by the Out of Ashes Organization, we were very excited to assist. It is great to see how our products can help a young person achieve their dreams.”

U.S. government statistical brief forecasts major growth in elderly population.
According to the Census Bureau's "middle series" projections, the elderly population will more than double between now and the year 2050, to 80 million. By that year, as many as 1 in 5 Americans could be elderly. Most of this growth should occur between 2010 and 2030, when the "baby boom" generation enters their elderly years. Read more details.
Federal Bill Proposed: Nurse and Patient Safety & Protection Act of 2007, HR 378
Introduced into the House of Representatives by Rep. John Conyers (D-MI), this bill proposes establishing a federal safe patient handling standard that requires the elimination of manual lifting of patients. This bill recognizes injuries among nursing staff have dramatically declined in facilities that have implemented patient handling equipment. Financial assistance through a grant program has been recommended to cover some or all of the costs of purchasing safe patient handling equipment for health care facilities.
